A monument to centuries of African American veterans

To support the unveiling of the African American Veterans Monument, Night Kitchen Interactive created a dynamic online exhibition and overhauled their website to be a one-stop shop for outreach, storytelling, and education. The African American Veteran's Monument, the first of its kind in the nation, was unveiled in the fall of 2022. The new website provides fundraising utilities, resources for visitors and veterans alike, and the latest news and updates from AAVM.

At the heart of the website is an online exhibition documenting the history of African Americans' service in the armed forces. Their contributions to each war effort are told through compelling media, archival imagery and vivid photography. The online exhibition expands upon onsite interpretive signage and features over 40 minutes of original interpretive videos.

Stories reveal new angles to well-known individuals, such as Harriet Tubman's combat experience as the first woman to lead an armed assault by U.S. troops during the Civil War. Others shed light on lesser-known soldiers like Henry Johnson, who single-handedly took on an entire platoon of German soldiers in World War I (and won).

The new website includes analytics reporting, social media integration, and newsletter sign-ups. The website will continue to provide updates to the public and strengthen connections between the monument and its visitors.
